Do all cars and light trucks need to have a NC Auto Inspection preformed?
No. Any car or light truck 35 years and older is exempt from t inspection process. No e-sticker/inspection of any kind is needed.
When is my NC Inspection Due?
Must have a completed Inspection preformed prior to renewal of your License plate. This means a Passed Inspection. At anytime within 60 days before your license plate expires , DMV keeps on file your inspection status.
How much will a NC inspection cost?
All NC inspection fees are strictly regulated by NC DOT and DMV.
NC Emission/Safety inspection cost 30.00 for 1996 and newer vehicles.
NC Safety inspections cost 13.60 for 1995 and older vehicles.
Do I have to pay if my car fails the inspection?
Yes, you will have to pay a portion of the fee and the rest of the amount when you return for the reinspection.
Emission failure cost is 23.75 and at time of reinspection you pay 6.25 for a total of 30.00.
Safety failure cost is 12.75 and at time of reinspection you pay 0.85 for a total of 13.60.
You will have 60 days to repair your failed item(s) and return to the same Inspection station for a reinspect of failed items and a completed/passed inspection reciept.
Do I have to pay extra if I have window tinting?
Yes, pass or fail you will have to pay an extra 10.00.
All after market window tint must pass a darkness test. The auto manufactures do not install to dark of tint. Trucks, Suv,Vans tint is checked on front doors and windshield only. Cars tint is checked on all windows and windshield.
All station must have a DMV tint meter and must test for darkness in the inspection bay during the inspection process.
Do all counties have the same rules?
No. DOT/DMV determines what counties are designated as an Emission or Safety only county.

Do I need a NC registration card to get my inspection done?
No. We do need proof of registered address where the auto is located to determine what type of inspection is required for you. We at Auto Inspection Express ask for your most current registration document to help in this area.
What if I don't use my auto and I don't renew my license plate?
You must turn in your plate to DMV to stop the inspection Proccess. If you go 90 days past your plate expiration, DMV system will automatically fine you and will block any registration activity until fine is payed and auto receives a completed inspection.
Can my car pass with a check engine light on?
A 1996 or newer vehicle will not pass the emissions inspection portion but will allow for the safety portion to be inspected. DMV system will print out information on why the inspection failed pertaining to the check engine light and to assist a mechanic of your choice to repair the problem. You will have 60 days to repair your failed item(s) and return to the same Inspection station for a reinspect of failed items and a completed/passed inspection reciept.
Be aware that after any repair work pertaining to a check engine light problem, you must complete a drive cycle which includes driving your car in city and highway conditions for about 75 miles for your onboard computer to cycle through its tests to determine if all emission components are working. If this is not done you will recieve a not ready rejection during your return visit for reinspection of repairs.
Will a cracked windshield fail my inspection?
No, unless the crack is tearing,catching,cutting,interfering with the operation of the wiper blades.
